Llandovery College V Welsh Academicals RFC
Llandovery RFC,Church Bank Playing Fields
Friday February 7th 7.00pm KO
This postponed fixture, was played as an evening kick off with the help of Llandovery RFC, with thanks also to Nathan Thomas for his efforts in re-arranging this game. Weather conditions played a part in the style of play that was to follow.
From the kick off Llandovery made good use of a very strong wind to drive the Accies back into their 22. Llandovery gained possession and moved the ball quickly across the field to the forwards. From the maul the Llandovery scrum half placed a delicate for their Number 12 to scoop up and touch down to the right of the posts to score the first try. Con by number 10. This early score and a strong wind in their favour put Llandovery in the driving seat. They had a much bigger set of players across the board, and used this advantage well. However, the tackling by the Accies was outstanding and this continued throughout the game. From the kick off the game continued in the same style, with long kicks to gain ground forcing the Accies back leading to a scrum in favour of Llandovery some 20 metres out. The Llandovery scrum half made a break from the base of the scrum side stepping twice inside to score under the posts. Con by number10. A further score before halftime came from a maul followed with a crash over try for Llandovery. Con by number 10.
HALF TIME – Llandovery College 21 -- Accies 0
The Accies now had the wind in their favour. Within minutes following a breakdown in midfield the ball ran loose, Frankie Souto gathered to score under the posts from 25 metres out, converted by Joe McCarthy. The wind was proving to play a bigger part in the game. Llandovery stopped kicking and were running with the ball at every opportunity. The tackling by the Accies and some ball handling errors by Llandovery made the game look more evenly shared. The Accies ball handling proved effective with strong runs and inter passing leading to a well-deserved try by Llyr Davies, converted by Joe McCarthy. The remainder of the second half continued with attacks by both sides being met with equally strong defences.
With the score now at 21 pts to 14pts in favour of Llandovery the Accies were going all out to for another score. Unfortunately, a penalty awarded to Llandovery late on was very well converted by number 12 to edge Llandovery up to 24pts. This was shortly followed by a very well worked try by Llandovery scored by their number 7.
