Accies U18s miss out in close finish against School and Colleges champions Llandovery
On Wednesday 10th January 2024 a Welsh Academicals Squad featuring players from a wide selection of schools and colleges travelled to Llandovery on a crisp winters’ day for this annual fixture. We were very lucky that the weather changed after virtually a month of very wet weather. The game was played in good conditions and was a very tight affair.
From the first whistle both sides showed a willingness to get the ball out wide . The Accies were first to register a score when winger Cellan Davies finished off a well-crafted move and fly half Rhun Davies added the conversion. Llandovery then applied a lot of pressure but with sound defence the Accies held firm to lead 7 nil at the break.
Early on in the second half the home team drew level when centre Dylan Rowe broke through after an interception to score a try that was converted by fly half Osian Jones. It did not take long for the Accies to retake the lead with some excellent handling and several phases creating space for centre Twm Davies to score a try that went unconverted. With only 10 minutes remaining substitute Callum Ferguson scored in the corner after the Accies lost possession on the halfway line. Osian Jones again added the 2 points with an excellent touch line conversion to give the home side a narrow 14 – 12 lead. The victory became assured close to time when substitute hooker George Nelson scored an unconverted try from a line out drive close to the Accies try line. The final score was therefore 19 – 12 to Llandovery. Rolling substitutions ensured the all players in the Accies squad enjoyed plenty of game time.
The afternoon was rounded off with speeches, tie presentations and food in the College Hall. An excellent occasion and our thanks once again to our brilliant hosts at Llandovery College.
