Welsh Exiles V Welsh Academicals
On Sunday 15th September a Welsh Academicals Squad featuring players from a wide selection of schools and colleges gathered at Cardiff Met University for this annual fixture against the Welsh Exiles. The game was an exciting, open and quality game of rugby played in excellent conditions and was well officiated by the referee and his assistants.
The Accies settled into their game very quickly and gained field position from kick off. After spending just a couple of minutes exerting pressure on the opposition line scrum half Iwan Jones sold a dummy from the base of a ruck and went over for a try converted well by fly half Nathan Williams. Halfway through the first half the Accies stole lineout possession and put full back Kian Monaghan in space and he made a superb break from his own half beating 3 defenders to score close to the posts. This was again converted by Nathan Williams. The Exiles hit back soon after when their good handling gave their left wing some space and he finished expertly with the fly half adding the 2 points. The Accies side then hit top gear and from turnover ball and good handling winger Billy Davies scored out wide and an excellent conversion saw Nathan Williams adding the 2 point. This was soon followed by prop Ellis Halliday touching down out wide but unfortunately the conversion bounced back off the upright. The half time whistle went with the Accies holding a 26 points to 7 advantage.
At the beginning of the second half the Exiles exerted some early pressure on the Accies line but a great break and offload by winger Billy Davies put replacement fly half Jacob Thomas into space to score a try that he converted himself to create a 26 point lead. It was at this point that the nature of the game changed as the Exiles took their chances and scored their second try soon after and their third with less than 10 minutes left on the clock. In a grandstand finish 2 further tries followed for the Exiles, the last one coming right at the end. All the conversions were successful to leave the final score in this pulsating game Welsh Exiles 35 Welsh Academicals 33. The whole squad enjoyed plenty of game time with rolling substitutions and contributed to an excellent game of rugby.
