Match Report Cambridge Uni 2023

Welsh Academicals  v. Cambridge University XL on Saturday November 4th 2023 K.O. 3.00p.m. at  Grange Road, Cambridge.

This season’s fixture was designated a memorial match for Gareth McComb who sadly passed away suddenly this summer. Gareth was the LX coach and his family and friends were present making it a special occasion.

The match started in good conditions but the weather was changeable throughout with heavy rain at times, making handling difficult but the pitch held up well. The game was played in an excellent spirt with both sides looking to run the ball whenever they could which resulted in an open game.

First Half :

The Accies opened the scoring with a good catch a drive from No.8 James Rhyddyerch-Roberts, which was unconverted. Cambridge then hit back with a smart move finished off by their No.7 which was converted to take them into the lead. The Accies then stole a Cambridge line out in their 22 with No.2 Lewys Williams going over for the try but the conversion was missed again. The Accies then scored through No.8 James Rhyddyerch-Roberts coming off the back off a scrum for a try, converted by No.10 Charlie Hancock. The Accies were getting a good platform upfront and after more pressure in the Cambridge 22 No.6 Hugo Lloyd Williams went over for the try. Cambridge did fight back before half-time scoring a converted try by their No.15

Half-Time: Accies 22 - 14

Second Half :

The Accies started the second half with an unconverted try by No.17 Tom Read finishing off an excellent move and the scored again through No.23 Gideon Jansen, but the conversion was missed. It was all now the Accies with further  unconverted tries being scored by No.4 Harry Davies and No.23 Gideon

Jansen, without reply from Cambridge with the Accies running out worthy winners.

Given the conditions there were some great handling skills on show and some great tries, the match played in the best traditions of the Accies style of play.
